Summary, etc. Since 2004, Generation Challenge Programme (www.generationcp.org) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) has used advances in molecular genetics to understand and combine the wealth in global stocks of crop genetic resources and by doing so to reach its goal of setting the foundation for a new generation of plants that meet small-holder farmer needs. Noteworthy of this endeavour it is the development of genomic resources, especially for orphan crops, those less-endowed with research funding because they benefit smaller, not less important, communities. The presentation will summarize the progress achieved in generating genomic resources for food security crops in the course of the last six years. It will also introduce the molecular marker toolkit, which aims to provide easy and unlimited access to existing information on molecular markers used in breeding programs; the Genotyping Support Service (GSS), which offers cost-efficient genotyping services, both for fingerprinting and analysis of genetic diversity and for molecular breeding, acting as the much-needed bridge between laboratory and field research worldwide; and a plan for establishing Communities of Practice to promote and sustain the use of molecular markers among researchers working with crops in developing countries.
