520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. New variety of vetch Abiza, which has been developed by us under experimental conditions, has largely contributed to the improvement of livestock fodder base in Georgia and produced remarkable harvest under dryland conditions of Georgia. It should be noted, that vetch is distinguished by its high economic value and yield as well as taste properties. Biological mass of vetch is remarkable. for the high protein content (20-30%). Digestible proteins in green mass amount to 30-32% and in air-dry mass to 15-17%. In favorable climate conditions and under cor- rect crop management vetch produces high yields. The grain yield amounted to 30 tons and the green mass harvest up to 15-18 tons. Spring varieties can produce higher yields of the green mass.(25 tons). The proposed vetch variety is a facultative variety suitable for sowing both in spring and autumn. Winter variety, in comparison with the spring one, requires less moisture during the vegetation period and produces higher yield. During the field experiment of 2001-2002, carried out on the dryland area located in village Norio, Gardabani District, we have determined optimal sowing dates for vetch, which ensured high yield. The experiment was carried out during 2 years at 50m2 plots and using 4 different treatments. Based on the results of our experiment at the explanation of basic reasons for yield variability under different sowing dates it should be noted that vetch sown in the second decade of November has rapidly grown (up to 10cm) due to early germination before winter season, while the low air temperature (-8 - 10 0c) in December-January have slowed down the growing rate of the plant. In variant III the plant sown in the first decade of December did not develop appropriately due to the beginning of cold period. This became more evident in variant IV, which was sown in the second decade of December. The best results were produced in variant II where the plant was sown in the third decade of November and had completely fit in the climate environment. The experiment data provides evidence that yield is significantly inf1uenced by planting dates.
