Chickpea and lentil are widely presented in food diet of the Azeri population. These crops are the most valuable sources of vegetable protein (Ami- rov, 1968). Therefore, it is very important to evaluate and use germplasm of food legumes provided by International Center of Agricultural Research for Dryland Areas (ICARDA) for developing new va- rieties (Singh, et al, 1983). We have studied more than 800 entries of chickpea, 300 entries of lentil and a number of entries of other legume crops supplied by ICARDA. Studies were conducted under dryland conditions in 2 zones: Mountainous Shirvan and South Mugan. In Mountainous Shirvan, the objectives of breeding for late-fall planted varieties are winter-hardiness and resistance to black stem. When planted in the late- fall, legume plants effectively utilize temperature and moisture in spring, bypass the drought and produce high yield. Out of the evaluated chickpea nurseries, the following entries were selected for high winter- hardiness, resistance to diseases and high grain yield: Flip 00-16C; F.99-66C; F.99-34C; F.99.1C, etc. Their grain yield varied from 2.5 to 3.2 t/ha. High- yielding variety "Narmin" was developed through numerous individual selections from population F.95- 65C. At present, Narmin is being evaluated by state testing committee. Primary seed production has been established for the variety to facilitate its promotion to the farms. Resistance to diseases, drought-tolerance and high productivity are priorities for developing improved varieties in South Mugan. The following entries of chickpea were found to be characterized by the desired traits: Flip 97-91 C, F.99-34C, F99- 46C, F99-66C, F.00-16C, F95-45C, F95-54C, etc. were marked. These species are also suitable for mechanized cultivation. "Narmin" and F.95-45C, F.95-54C have been already introduced into production and their area keeps increasing annually. As a result of the study of lentil germplasm, the following entries were selected: Flip 2002-6 L, F.95-8 L, F.87-9 L, F.2002-4 L, F.97-1L, ILL8019, 8020, and 6037. They were found to be valuable sources of Fusarium resistance and high yield. (0.9 -1.1 t/ha). Large-grain variety " Arzu" was developed through individual selection out of entry ILL 6037. This variety is ready for submission to the state testing system. Other " Arzu" entries, ILL8019 and ILL 8020 are distinguished for their farming values. Crop management practices were improved and primary seed production for promising food legume varieties was organized for their wide introduction into farming practice. |
