520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Maize is a very important source of income for Georgian farmers. Intensification of maize pro- duction can be achieved through increasing of grain yield by means of increasing of cultivated area for yellow grained hybrids. The best choice for our far- ming economy is utilization of 40-45% of the maize cultivation area (84-90 thousand ha) under the white- grained local species and 55-60% (115-125 thousand ha) under the yellow-grained hybrids, or, in other words, at present the primary task is introduction into the farming economy of new highly productive yellow-grained maize hybrids. Development of such hybrids is carried out in Georgian RI of Agriculture. The following hybrids, showing high yield under irrigation in East Georgia, were produced in the insti- tute: Kartuli 9, Tserovani 1, Tserovani 2, Tserovani 3. However, their cultivation in West Georgian sub- tropics zone ofthe traditional maize farming is limited by fungous disease caused by Helminthosporium turcicum Pass. The zone the hotbed of the disease and the above mentioned hybrids are highly suscep- tible. The local subtropic varieties Abasheti yellow and Geguti yellow were used in crosses for the development of hybrids with wide adaptation. The following combinations were selected from the produced hybrids: B73 x Geguti Yellow, MOl72426 x Geguti Yellow, (B73 x B84) x Geguti Yellow, B73 x Abasheti Yellow, MOl72426 x Abasheti Yellow, (Mo172426x Geguti Yellow)xB73, (B73 xMo172426) xAbasheti Yellow. They show grain yield exceeding that ofthe check open-pollinated varieties Abasheti Yellow, Geguti yellow and Ajameti White by 17- 22%. One of the hybrids, Lomtagora 1 (B73xB84) x Geguti yellow has been released already. Its yield has exceeded the check Geguti Yellow by 2.2 t/ha (26,5%) during the field trials at Tskhaltubo Trial Station. Hybrid Lomtagora 1 demonstrated excellent yield potential. Yield of 2.3-3 tons of hybrid seed per hectare is achievable under the planting layout 6:2.
