520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Armenia is a country with limited cropland resources. Therefore, increase of crop yield is a very important economic indicator. This equally important interms of barley as its grain is used in Armenia as the main grain-fodder crop and raw material for beer industry. Yield increase of winter barley can be achieved through breeding, development and introduction into production of improved varieties with higher yield and enhanced adaptation to the local conditions. A study of the world collection of winter barley received in 1976-2001 from all RI of Plant industry and in 1998-2203 from ICARDA was carried out at the Mertsavan Experimental Station of the Research Center of Agriculture and Plant Protection. 1500 enteres were studied in total, out of which early maturing, winter hardy and disease and lodging resistant varieties were selected. At present, they are under testing at the check nursery. A part of the entries from the world collection was used in breeding programs. As a result, two new varieties Mush and Utik belonging to subspecies pollidium have been selected. The test results of these two varieties are given in Table below. The released variety Ararati 7 served as a check. The data in- dicate that varieties Nush and Utik are more productive and better adapted to the local environ- ment as compared to check variety Ararati 7. It should be noted that new varieties Mush and Utik, as well as check variety Ararati 7 excel most entries from the world collection in biological and economic performance. The developed varieties have the following characteristics. Variety Mush. Released in 1994. Spike - light yellow, uniform, six-rowed. Grain is elliptic shape, large (1000 grain-weight-49-52 g). Stem is strong and erect. Days to maturity -220. The variety is known for high winter hardiness (4.0-4.5 scores by five-point scale ). Crude protein content in grain is 13.2-14.8%. The variety is distinguished by high yield under conditions of irrigation and proper crop management 6.0 to 7.5 t/ha. Variety Utik. Released in 2000. Spike - yellow, six-rowed, with uniformly located grains. Grain is large (1000 grain-weight-47-54 g). Stem Is strong, winter-hardy (4.0-4.5 points by five-point scale ). Days to maturity lasts 225 days. Resistant to smut of wheat. Crude protein content in grain - 13.7-15.1 %. Yield under conditions of irrigation and proper crop management -6.0-8.5 t/ha. The stem and leaves in the new varieties are dark green, with more pronounced coating, parti- cularly prior to heading. The said varieties are resi- stant to lodging and diseases and are distinguished by early maturity which, under Ararat valley con- ditions, enables obtaining of the second crop of vegetables, potatoes and maize. The entries received from ICARDA were also used in selecting such new varieties as Utik 2, Sevan and Sasun currently undergoing the state variety testing.
