520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is one of the most important cereal crops in Turkish agriculture with 3,5 million ha acreage, 8 million tons production and 2.3 t/ha average yield. Turkish highlands that are characterized of severe cold winter and terminal droughts cover nearly 60- 70% acreage (Akar et al., 1998). The first winter facultative barley cultivar, Tokak 157/37, was predominant till the last decade with 80-90% acreage in Central Anatolia and Transitional zones through the highlands. Due to the extensive breeding studies, many cold and drought tolerant cultivars with desirable grain quality and agronomic traits have been developed during the last decades under the Central Research Institute for Field Crops' (CRIFC) barley breeding program. According to results of large acreage, Bulbul-89, Tarm-92, Orza-96 and Cetin- 2000 barley cultivars have out yielded the predominant cultivar Tokak-157 /37 by 25%,39%, 20% and 35%, respectively. As a result of apparent yield advantage of these new cultivars together with more resistance to lodging and resistance to disease, acreage of the Tokak 157/37 has dramatically lowered from 68% in 2000 to 31% in 2004. These areas have mainly been replaced with new cultivars of Tarm-92 and Bulbul-89, Orza-96and Cetin-2000.
