520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Through support of CIMMYT, the Kotayk Marz Agricultural Support Center carried out a comparative study of four varieties of winter wheat (W-301, Bezostaya 1, Stephens and Eltan) as influenced by an innovative planting technology. The technology implied forming furrows in the field across the slope right after the sowing. The technology is supposed to improve the retaining of moisture by soil and enhance the efficiency of using moisture by plants. The experiment was conducted in the season of 2002-2003 on a 6-hectare field which was situated in the foothills of the Kotayk region. The study provided evidence that soil moisture content in the field with furrows was about 25 % higher than that of the check field. Furthermore, the level of over-wintering, tillering, plant growth and grain yield were higher on the field with furrows. During the unfavorable winter conditions of 2003, the highest yield was observed for variety W-301, which was translated into extra income for the farmers. Based on one-hectare estimates, W-301 provided the farmer with extra income of $74.1, $15.8 and$96.3 as compared with Bezostaya 1, Stephens and Eltan, respectively. Besides, horizontal furrows contributed to the mitigation of the process of soil erosion on the farmer field.
