520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Radical changes have taken place in the agricultural land use structure following land privatization. As a result of the above and a number of other reasons ( the lack of a wholesale agricultural commodity market, processing industry and working capital at farms, as well as land fragmentation), areas sown to winter wheat have significantly lncreased at the expense of the areas of fruit plantations, vineyards and perennial feed crops (alfalfa and saifoin ). Winter wheat is cultivated in all agricultural areas of the republic. In 2003, it occupied 27% of the whole cropland. For most fanner holdings it has become monoculture. The research based system of primary seed production has been completely liquidated in Armenia, which aggravates the situation in the agricultural sector. Heavy infestation with weeds (particularly monocotyledonous), diseases and pests are observed in the fields. The urgent problem of Armenia is not only the establishment of cereal and other crop primary seed multiplication system but also introduction of new high yielding varieties (particularly of winter wheat) into production. In 2002-2003, within the framework of international cooperation winter wheat improvement in Central Asia and the Caucasus, and through the direct assistance of CIMMYT, we carried out a comparative study of 7 promising winter wheat varieties. Five of them were locally selected varieties, one variety was introduced from CIMMYT/ ICARDA germplasm, while the other was imported from the USA. Registered variety Armaynka 60 served as a check. Yield of varieties was studied at three seeding rates- 3.0,4.5 and 6.0 mln germinated seeds per hectare in a trial with three replications. The trial was carried out at the Echmiadzin experimental station of the of Agriculture and Plant Protection, located in the Ararat valley. The trial results showed that the variant with 4.5 mln germinated seeds per hectare was more favorable as compared to the other seeding rates. Table below shows the trial results. The data suggests that out of7 studied varieties the top yielders were: local variety Ani , Armcim selected from the nurseries provided by CIMMYT, and two short- stature varieties Armavir and Aray. Productivity of these varieties, depending on the seeding rate, varied between 4.3 and 4.6 t!ha. Relatively high yields were recorded for varieties Armcim (4.6 t/ha) and Ani (4.6 t/ha) at the seeding rate of 4.5 mln germinated seeds per hectare. As compared to the check variety, these varieties are also distinguished with the high gluten content. Variety Armavir excels all other varieties in its high test weight (810-811 hl). In 2003-2004, the study of promising winter wheat varieties continues. On-farm trial of variety Armcim is being carried out at 5 farmer fields. Seed growing of the most promising varieties Ani and Armcim has been organized.
