520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Yellow rust is one of the most dangerous fungous diseases of wheat, which may significantly affect crop yield in the regions with the promoting environment. Severity of the yellow rust epidemics varies by years. Lately, yellow rust has been rendering great damage to grain yield in all wheat -growing regions of our republic. In this connection, researchers of Agriculture of Azerbaijan carry out studies with the purpose of developing high-yielding and yellow rust resistant varieties. It is necessary to note that the yellow rust pathogen keeps evolving and often gives rise to new races. The races of yellow rust pathogens can cha- nge every year, or every 1-2 years. It is associated with the advent of environmental conditions pro- moting expansion of the pathogens and with the mul- tiplicity of yellow rust susceptible hosts. To study races of the pathogen, field expedi- tions were carried out in various regions of the republic and yellow rust spores were collected from various varieties in the commercial and research fields. The purpose of the study was identification of all yellow rust races encountered in the region, evaluation of their virulence and study of the pathogen race. The other important issue was identification of genes that are effective under the local conditions and can confer resistance to the varieties developed by the local breeding program. Due to the current lack of necessary. equip- ment for studying the yellow rust races at our insti- tute, the collected spores were sent to the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2002, where the races were de- termined through the techniques ofR. Jonson, R. W. Stubbs E. Fuchs and N.H. Chamberlain. The study identified 7 new races, which are listed according to the regions of their collection: 1. Absheron -70E6 + 2. Gobustan 22E6A+ 3. Gobustari 6E6A + 4. Gobustan 6E2A+ 5.Terter 14E142A+ 6. Terter 2EA+ 7. Zaqatala 134E134A+ The next set of yellow rust pathogens, col- lected in 200 1, was also sent to Iran. Despite the destruction of the majority of spores under the im- pact of the environmental factors, 2 more new races have been identified. These are Absheron-6E6A + andAbsheron-142E150A+. Thus, in the course of out studies, 9 new races of yellow rust have been found in Azerbaijan. Research of the new racial structure of yellow rust is under way.
