520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The associations were studied between endosperm cell number, starch granule number, rate of grain filling and mature kernel size of three corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids, Limagrain 1, Pride 1108, and Ornamental popcorn 392A, selected on the basis of their differences in kernel size. Hybrid Limagrain 1 (LG1) which had large kernels also had higher rates of grain filling, more endosperm cells, and more starch granules than the other two hybrids. Pride 1108 which had bigger kernels than Popcorn also had higher rates of grain filling, more endosperm cells, and more starch granules. Basal kernels had more endosperm cells (with the exception of Popcorn), more starch granules, higher rates of filling and larger sizes at maturity compared to the corresponding tip kernels. When data were compared across all genotypes, years, and kernels positions, highly significant positive correlations were found among the four characteristics measured. However, correlations between starch granule number and both rate of filling and final kernel size tended to be higher (r=0.971 and 0.935, respectively) than those between endosperm cell number and rate of filling and kernel size (r=0.733 and 0.813, respectively). Starch granule sizes of the three corn hybrids were examined with the help of Scanning Electron Microscopy. Among the three hybrids, starch granules of Popcorn were only slightly larger than than the starch granules of the other two hybrids. In another study, the association of starch granule number and mature kernel size among nine corn hybrids, with kernel weights ranging from 21 to 41g/100 kernels, was found to be highly positive (r=0.952). In total, results of the research suggest that rate of grain filling, and mature kernel size are highly dependent upon endosperm starch granule number established within the first 3 weeks after silk emergence. Starch granule number, in turn, is related to endosperm cell number.
