520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Inbred lines, F1 hybrids, and composites of corn (Zea may L.) exhibited a wide range in tolerance to aluminum. F1 hybrids obtained from inbred lines differing in A1 tolerance exhibited tolerance equal to or greater than that of the more tolerant parent, indicating that tolerance is a dominant trait. F2 and backcross (BC) populations had two distinct classes of tolerance when screened over a wide range of AI stress, with segregating ratios of tolerant: sensitive plants of 3:1 and 1:1, respectively. Progeny obtained by selling tolerant plants from a composite also segregated into distinct classes of tolerance. The wide range in tolerance to AI among genotypes as well as the existence of distinct classes of tolerance in S1, F2, and BC populations suggested that AI tolerance in corn is controlled at a single locus by a multiple allelie series. Screening of reciprocal crosses as well as inbred lines in various cytoplasms showed no cytoplasmic affect on A1 tolerance in corn.
