Summary, etc. Excessive weed growth is one of the most serious problems facing farmers throughout the tropics. There is a need for professionally trained weed scientists to become involved in research at the highest level, where existing technologies can be further developed and new ones generated. The book considers in depth the concepts, principles and practices of tropical agriculture and introduces students and teachers to weed science as an integral part of a crop protection programme. Dr. Akobundu is an experienced weed scientist who has drawn together in one book all aspects of weed science necessary to students and teachers of the subject: weed biology and ecology; weed-crop interactions; coverage of the role of seed bank, seed rain, reproduction in weeds and crop mimicry by weeds, The use of herbicides in the tropics is not only new but also poorly understood. The author includes chapters on herbicide chemistry, classification, presence and fate in tropical environments, and action in plants soils. Safe use of herbicides, including handling, disposal, and first-aid treatment are discussed. Weed control practices applicable to a wide range of arable and plantation crops, multiple cropping and conservation tillage systems are aso discussed.
