520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The exchange ofgermplasm to introduce desirable characteristics and widen the genetic variability is a critical need of the breeding programs. Considering that the Southern Cone, except Chile, represents a homogeneous region, the National Wheat Improvement Programs have been the leaders to identify this need on regional basis. The informal germplasm exchanges started in the 1950 's were consolidated by the creation of Cooperative Agricultural Technology Development Program of Southern Cone (PROCISUR) and the opening of a CIMMYT Regional Office for wheat research. The Southern Cone Advanced Unes Observation Nursery (LACaS) is an important vehicle to exchange and evaluate regional germplasm at key sites. Over the last two decades (1981-2000), a total of 5737 advanced wheatlines were evaluated in a total 49410cations; thereby permitting the identification of key sites (hot spots) for different agronomic characteristics. Almost 70% ofthe germplasm included in the LACaS nurseries originated from local crosses and the remaining 30% represented germplasm of CIMMYT or other origins. A global analysis of the data demonstrates a tendency of significant improvement in the resistances to leaf and stem rusts and spot blotch but little improvement in resistances to powdery mildew, septoria glume blotch and fusarium head blight. The utilization of the advanced lines selected by the National Programs has also improved, especially in the last few years.
