En Latinoamérica, la agroecología se ha transformado en la base científica fundamental para el desarrollo de sistemas de producción campesinos, que conservan los recursos naturales, incrementan la seguridad alimentaria y, a la vez, empoderan social y culturalmente a los agricultores. Uno de los desafíos claves para promover alternativas de desarrollo rural es poder evaluar si estas estrategias realmente encaminan a las comunidades hacia la sustentabilidad. En otras palabras, cómo se pueda e tomar el pulso al agro ecosistema para verificar si los objetivos sociales, ambientales y económicos de la sustentabilidad se están cumpliendo. la metodología del MESMIS, aquí explicada e ilustrada a través de una serie de estudios de caso en la región, constituye una herramienta fundamental para evaluar el nivel de sustentabilidad de sistemas de producción agrícolas. Esta evaluación es crucial para entender el estado agroecológico del sistema, con el fin de proponer modificaciones agroecológicas claves para estabilizar rendimientos, conservar los recursos y mejorar la viabilidad económica y social de la agricultura. |
