El maiz en la Sierra ecuatoriana constituye uno de los cereales mas importantes y es un elemento basico en la dieta alimenticia de gran porcentaje de pequenos productores que habitan esa region, considerada de agricultura tradicional. El Programa de Maiz de la Estacion Experimental "Santa Catalina" del INIAP, realiza investigaciones para esta region, buscando obtener variedades mejoradas con mayor adaptacion, estabilidad y mayor productividad.
