Con el objetivo de seleccionar variedades de maíz de grano blanco y amarillo con tolerancia al déficit hídrico, se sembraron 18 experimentos en campos de agricultores colaboradores y en la estación experimental de El Ejido, ubicada en la provincia de Los Santos, República de Panamá en los años 2010, 2011 y 2012. Las variedades sintéticas evaluadas se obtuvieron del proyecto Generación y validación de variedades de maíz tolerantes a sequía como medio de estabilizar productividad y disminuir el daño por micotoxinas como consecuencia del cambio climático. Para evaluar la tolerancia al déficit hídrico cada año se sembraron una serie de ensayos en agosto y otros en octubre. En todos los años, la precipitación pluvial en la siembra de agosto fue mayor que en octubre. El período crítico de falta de humedad fue después de los 50 días después de siembra (dds) con diferencias de 94, 146 y 176 mm para cada año, respectivamente. Las diferencias entre ambas siembras de los distintos ensayos variaron de 0,85 a 2,75 t.ha-1 para los años 2010 y 2011 y de 4,00 a 3,27 t.ha-1 en el año 2012. Se realizaron los análisis de varianza de todos los ensayos y los mismos mostraron diferencias estadísticas entre cultivares. Se obtuvieron altos porcentajes de repetitividad y bajos coeficientes de variación. En los distintos grupos de cultivares se identificaron y seleccionaron tres variedades sintéticas promisorias por su buen rendimiento en el promedio general de todas las localidades y el buen grado de tolerancia o baja reducción del rendimiento debido al déficit hídrico a que fueron sometidos. |
