Summary, etc. The International Winter Wheat Improvement Program (IWWIP) was established in 1986 as collaboration between Turkey and CIMMYT with the objectives to develop wheat cultivars for the winter and facultative wheat growing areas in West Asia and North Africa (WANA) and the Central Asian Republics (CAR). In addition it was to facilitate germplasm exchange among winter wheat breeders. IWWIP maintains close links with Oregon State University wheat programs in the Great Plains, Eastern Europe and China. ICARDA joined the network in 1990. Considering that facultative wheats dominate in the target area, Spring x Winter wheat crosses are emphasized. About 1/3 of the crosses are among winter x winter wheats. In addition, segregating populations are obtained from Oregon and Mexico. Selections are done at locations between 35Q - 402 North which allows development of photoperiod insensitive wheats. Summer planting provides information on the vernalization requirement. The most important diseases in the target area are yellow rust, leaf rust and common bunt. Although straw is harvested for animal feeding, wheat grazing is basically unknown in WANA. Through the IWWIF: cereal cyst nematodes, boron toxicity and zinc-deficiency were identified as production constraints in WANA. Zinc application increases grain yield by 10 percent-500 percent. Genotypic differences for zinc-efficiency within and between species are significant. Consequently, breeding for zinc-efficiency became a high priority in the IWWIP.
