En Ecuador se pueden considerar cuatro zonas principales de produccion de maiz duro: 1) Zona Central del Litoral (provincia de Los Rios); 2) la provincia del Guayas (Balzar); 3) la zona de Manabi; 4) provincia de La Loja. De estas cuatro, las dos primeras presentan adecuadas precipitaciones, mientras que en Manabi y Loja tienen limitaciones en ese sentido. Dada esta situacion las investigaciones para estas zonas, en lo que se refiere a maiz duro, se han orientado a la obtencion de genotipos precoces, con tolerancia a la sequia.
