520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Results are presented of 45 trials on the silking-maturity period in 1977, 1978, 1979 in 9 countries by participants in the FAO European cooperative network on maize. This study is based on eleven hybrids and a great number of methods for calculating heat units using linear estimations based on: daily maximum temperature (S(, x)), and daily mean temperature (S) with different temperature thresholds and one ceiling temperature (30 deg C), and some methods from the literature (Brown, 1969; Blacklow, 1972; Arnold, 1975; Gilmore and Rogers, 1958). The best test to follow maturation is grain moisture. This is closely related to heat unit accumulation.
