520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This review summarizes the main accomplishments of investigations on the genetic control of various physiological traits related to maize productivity. Particular emphasis was given to the general features and genotypic differDEes of the following processes: (1) ion uptake by roots;(2) cold tolerance at early stages; and(3) maize photosynthesis and its relation to productivity. The main conclusions are that overall productivity in maize can be correlated fairly well with fundamental physiological processes, but breeders need physiologists to identify and quantify rate-limiting steps in these processes. Moreover, the development of simple and fast
