Las estrategias en un programa de desarrollo de híbridos deben estar orientadas a lograr objetivos a corto plazo. Las fuentes de germoplasma que se utilicen son muy importantes, necesitan poseer características agronómicas deseables, principalmente en lo relativo a altura de planta, mazorca y calidad de tallo, que permitan generar buenos progenitores. Para lograr estos objetivos es indispensable incorporar nuevas etapas y modificaciones a los sistemas convencionales para obtener mayor eficiencia. En esta presentación se discutirán varios aspectos sobre el desarrollo de fuentes de germoplasma, orientadas a la formación de híbridos, integración e introducción de nuevos esquemas de mejoramiento de poblaciones paralelas al desarrollo de híbridos, creatividad en la obtención de líneas vigorosas y productivas usando estrategias diversas y eficientes, caracterización precisa de líneas en ensayos de evaluación per-se y pruebas de aptitud combinatoria en cruzamiento con probadores. Identicafión de nuevos híbridos durante la etapa de desarrollo de híbridos, predicciónes de nuevos híbridos con menor número de cruzas simples, uso efectivo de líneas en formación de nuevas poblaciones y grupos heteróticos sintéticos. Se discuten opciones para obtener híbridos simples y eficientes en el futuro. |

The strategies in a hybrid development program should be so oriented to achieve short, medium and long term objectives. The germplasm source utilized is quite important and should possess desirable agronomic traits with good plant and ear height characteristics along with good stalk quality to allow development of good progenitors. To achieve these objectives, it is imperative to introduce new strategies and modifications in the conventional systems to obtain higher efficiency. In this presentation various aspects are discussed relating to germplasm source oriented towards hybrids, integration and introduction of new schemes of population improvement parallel to hybrid development, production of vigorous and productive lines using diversified and efficientstrategies, precise characterization of lines in inbred-line evaluation trials, combining ability in crosses with testers, identification of new hybrids during various stages of hybrid development, prediction of new hybrids with less number of single crosses, use of inbred lines in forming new populations as well as heterotic groups and synthetics. Options for developing single cross hybrids to add efficiency in the future are discussed. |
