Summary, etc. Plants of winter rye (Secale cereale L.) with leaf-awned spikes obtained after self-pollination of short-stemmed population are described. As compared to normal plants, their stems and spikes were shorter, but the top lemma of the floret - significantly longer. The top lemma basis transforming into a husky outgrowth was similar to leaves in the anatomical structure. Plants with leaf-awned spikes were of a lower fertility and sometimes bending in the node below the spike was observed. It has been found that the character of leaf-awned spikes is determined by a single recessive gene, which was given the symbol la after term "leaved awns". It may be expected
