El ICTA inicio en 1989 un programa de investigacion destinado al desarrollo de tecnologias adecuadas para suelos de laderas, fragiles, de baja fertilidad o bajo un sistema de agricultura de subsistencia con el proposito de reducir la degradacion de estos suelos y asi ayudar a mantener la sostenibilidad de los sistemas de produccion en estas areas. Se evaluaron agronomica y economicamente tres leguminosas para ser intercaladas con el maiz a saber: Vigna unguiculata y Canavalia ensiformis y Mucuna en dos areas de Guatemala: Cuyuta (ciclos 1989-1990); y Zacapa (ciclos 1990-1991).
