520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in concentrations from 10('-12) M to 10('-9) M does not stimulate elongation when applied to intact roots of maize (Zea mays L Bear Hybrid WF 9 X 38). Higher concentrations are inhibitory. In roots pretreated with the ethylene biosynthesis inhibitors, colbalt and aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), IAA from 10('-10) M to 10('-8) M promotes growth. High concentrations of IAA (eg. 10('-6) M) strongly inhibit growth in either pretreated or non-pretreated roots. The data indicate that low concentrations of auxin are capable of stimulating the growth of intact roots in which ethylene biosynthesis is suppressed. This suggests that
