Summary, etc. The primary objective of this four-year study was to determine the best N-P ratio for maize grown on a sandy coastal plain Ultisol high in residual P (Norfolk sandy loam, soil test P rating 110 lb/ac of Mehlich I extractable P). Starter fertilizer treatments were 0, 20, 40 and 60 lb/ac of N and P2O5 applied in all possible combinations. The fertilizer was dribbled on the soil surface inthe row area and mixed with the upper 2 to 4 inches of soil. In each year, N improved early season plant growth. In one of the four years, P added with N hada positive effect on early season plant growth, but in the other years, P added alone or with N had no effect on
