520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Leaf solute concentrations and photochemical activities of the winter wheat cultivar Fredrick and spring wheat cultivar Glenlea were measured in hardened and unhardened plants. The leaf solute concentration of both cultivars increasedsignificantly during growth at the cold hardening temperature, with a slightly higher rate in winter wheat. The difference in solute accumulation between the 2cultivars did not account for their difference in cold hardiness. The findings suggested that osmotic adjustment is mainly a response to low temperature stressand could be indirectly involved in the development of freezing resistance. Thisosmotic adjustment may help
