Determinants of fertilizer and manure use in maize production in Kiambu District, Kenya - Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CIMMYT|EARO : 1999 - p. 343-347 - Printed

A survey of 97 small scale farmers was undertaken in Kikuyu, Kiambaa and Githunguri divisions of Kiambu District (central Kenya) to assess the factors that influence the adoption of inorganic fertilizer and manure in maize production. These factors were modeled using logit regression analysis. Results showed that extension service and off-farm income are significant factors in the adoption of manure alone. Age of the household head, extension services, membership of an organization, and off-farm income significantly influenced the use of inorganic fertilizer alone, and the use of both inorganic fertilizer and manure was significantly influenced by extension services, membership of an organization, household size, hired labor for manure, livestock ownership, and off-farm Income.
