The in vitro translation of mRNAs isolated from stressed and unstressed barley plants showed that the appearance of new proteins in response to heat shock was a consequence of (1) induction and translation of new mRNAs during thestress and (2) modification in the aggregation state of the proteins or in some of their chemico physical properties. The mRNAs corresponding to the induced proteins were cloned as cDNA either in phages or plasmids and the cDNA library analysed by differential hybridization with mRNA from stressed and unstressed plants.
