Maize yield responses to plant density and nitrogen fertilization in low and mid-altitude environments in Tanzania

Kaswende, J.S.

Maize yield responses to plant density and nitrogen fertilization in low and mid-altitude environments in Tanzania - Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CIMMYT : 1997 - Printed

Yield responses of a newly released maize variety to plant density and nitrogen fertilizer were evaluated in a field experiment conducted in 1988, 1989 and 1990 at various locations in the low- and mid-altitude environments. Across location and season analyses showed a non-significant effect of plant density on yield. The current recommendation of 44,444 plants per hectare is recommended for the new variety. Yield responses to applied nitrogen were significant in all sites. The 40 kg and 80 kg nitrogen rates per hectare gave optimum yields at most locations. Economic analysis showed 40 kg of nitrogen per hectare to be optimum at Ilonga.
