Francolin#1, a CIMMYT derived common wheat line released as BARI Gom 27 in Bangladesh, is highly resistant to leaf rust and stripe rust. The genetic basis of the resistance was investigated using 198 F5 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross with susceptible Avocet-YrA. The population was phenotyped for reaction to leaf rust and stripe rust over two years at two Mexican field sites. Genetic analysis indicated the presence of three and five additive genes in adult plants for leaf rust and stripe rust resistance, respectively; among which one was Lr46/Yr29 based on a linked molecular marker. Greenhouse seedling phenotypes and molecular marker analyses indicated the presence of Lr16 and a temporarily designated gene YrF in Francolin#1 for resistance to leaf rust and stripe rust, respectively. Both genes were located on chromosome 2BS but were independently inherited. The effect of Lr16 on leaf rust reaction in the field was minor (8?9% severity reduction) whereas YrF showed a slightly higher effect on stripe rust reaction (10?25% severity reduction). Yr29 together with YrF showed a significant additive effect on stripe rust reaction in the field and resulted in a 11-16% severity reduction. Additional slow rusting leaf rust QTLs were detected on chromosomes 3DC (C = centromere region) and 7DS, whereas stripe rust QTLs were on chromosomes 1DS, 2BS, 3DC and 6AL The high levels of resistance in Francolin#1 to both rusts were governed by combinations of small effect race specific and slow rusting resistance genes
