Variability in protein content of photosynthetic membranes in genotypes of Triticum aestivum differing in drought tolerance - Tbilisi (Georgia) CIMMYT : 2004 - p. 300-301 - Printed

Abstract only

Seedlings of two bread wheat varieties Giy- matli-2/17 (drought susceptible) and Saratovskaya- 29 (drought tolerant) were grown under conditions of normal water supply and water stress. The synthesis rate for a -and b -subunits of the CFI ATF-synthase complex (with Mr 57.5 and 55 d/Sa, respectively) has been found to decrease in both wheat genotypes as compared to the check. Synthesis of polypeptides within the nuclear antenna FC 2 is also affected by water stress. At the same time, in drought-susceptible variety Giymatli-2/17, the polypeptide rate 48.5 d/Sa (CP 47) is particularly lowered, while protein 44 d/Sa (CP 43) disappears completely. D 1 protein of nucleus FC 2 is also near to disappearance in Giymatli-2/17 .A new band in the area 40.5 d/Sa is found to appear in drought tolerant Saratovskaya-29. Giymatli-2/17 has been found completely void of polypeptide in the area 19 d/Sa. Also observable is a reduction of protein synthesis in the area 16.5 d/Sa. Possible mechanisms of drought action on the structural-functional components of photosynthetic activity of wheat are discussed.
