According to the F AO, the total worldwide planted maize area in 1973 was 111 million ha, with a total production of 312 million tons (average yield 2010 kg/ha). Over half of the total world area planted is in Latin America, Africa, and South and Southwes! Asia-in the tropics and semitropics south of 30°N latitude-but this vast region produces only about one fourth of the total world tonnage. The distribution of this acreage and tonnage among the different maize-growing areas is shown in Table 1. About 50% of all the maize produced iri the tropics and semitropics is produced in Latin America.
