Application of herbicides to control weeds in maize crop of maize was studied. Weed control effects of herbicides 2,40 D and Dialen were tested under the conditions of red soils of west Georgia.. Herbicides were applied at two dates: 1. before emergence and 2. at the stage of 3-5 leaves. Such pattern of application of herbicides is the most effective. At entering herbicide into ground both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous weeds are controlled. The weeds surviving the first treatment are subjected to spraying at the second stage of treatment. Effectiveness of herbicides depends on soil and weather conditions. In warm, moderately humid conditions shoots of weeds appear quickly and the treatment effects is high. In reverse conditions controlling effect of the herbicides decreases. Research ascertained that 2-step treatment with 1,5 l/ha 2,4D and 2,5 l/ha Dialen before emergence and at the stage of 3-5 leaves effectively reduces population of weeds, however not totally eliminating them due to the short-term effect of the indicated chemicals. However, to control weeds that appear after expiration of herbicide effect hoeing is recommended. Such weed control practices ensure maize corn yield as high as 60- 70 c/ha can be ensured.
