The cultivation of dwarf wheats in India dates back to a very ancient period, that of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Kernels of Triticum spherococcum, populary know as the Indian dwarf wheats, have been recovered excavations in Mohenjodaro. Due to its low yield potential and high susceptibility to rusts, its cultivation generally dwindled the species is now maintained only in research institutions.
