Status in breeding for resistance to maize diseases at CIMMYT - Los BaƱos, Laguna (Philippines) PCARRD : 2000 - 10 pages - Printed

Selection of resistant germplasm for the major diseases that attack maize in the different maize growing ecologies served by CIMMYT is an integral part of the germplasm improvement process. This paper will refer to activities carried out from CIMMYT headquarters with respect to the identification and use of disease resistant germplasm. At locations where CIMMYT germplasm is evaluated in Mexico, a combination of both natural and artificial inoculations are utilized to provide adequate disease pressure for the selection process. Populations, synthetics and inbred line products are available which possess resistance to many of the important maize diseases. A key activity in the future will be to study the inheritance of these traits, and to utilize these sources of resistance in the recycling of superior lines.
