Diallel analysis is a sophisticated form of progeny testing and can be used by the plant breeder as an aid in selection. Information can be obtained which is not available from any other analysis. There are many methods of analysis and modifications, but there are four basic methods as described in the following: Jinks and Hayman (1953), Griffing (1956b), Gilbert (1958), and Gardner and Eberhart (1966). Each analysis requires certain assumptions wich may restrict its use, or the interpretations to be made. Before initiating a diallel cross, the breeder should decide on the purpose or level of the analysis desired, then select the appropriate reference population. From these choices, it is then relatively easy to select the appropriate analysis. It should be remembered, however, that diallels or other complicated designs cannot assure success in reaching plant breeding goals, but if used properly will increase the chances of success.
