Barley yellow dwarf is a serious disease of wheat caused by Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). All wheat collections tested have been proven vulnerable to BYDV infection. However, Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth and Dewey (syn. Agropyron intermedium (Host) P.B.), a hexaploid perennial Triticeae species (2n=6x=42.E1E2X=JJsSt), contains at least two genes for BYDV resistance located on the chromosome of group 7 or group 2, respectively. The wheat-Th. intermedium addition line L1 carries the BYDV resistance gene (Bdv2) located on the alien chromosome 7X, showing good resistance to PAV serotype of BYDV: Meanwhile, the wheat-Th. intermedium partial amphiploid Zhong4 Awnless carries another BYDV resistance gene, different from that of L1, located on the chromosome of group 2. lt shows better resistance to GAV and GPV serotypes of BYDV: Amphidiploid CPI 113500 derived from Ag. pulcherrimum also shows good BYDV resistance. Some derivative lines from these resistance sources were developed and they can be used for wheat breeding program for BYDV resistance. Molecular markers for the resistance were developed and applied.
