Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) is a viral disease caused by a synergistic interaction of Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus (MCMV) and Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) or other viruses such as Maize Dwarf Mosaic Virus (MDMV) or Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV). In eastern Africa, MLN has so far been reported to be caused by a combination of MCMV and SCMV infection, but MCMV and SCMV alone are also capable of causing significant damage. Therefore, most research efforts, including standardization of diagnostic protocols, are focused on these two viruses (MCMV and SCMV).
