Turkey is one of the principal consumers of wheat in the world. In the 1970's with the support of CIMMYT, Oregon State University and the Rockefeller foundation, the country increased its production of wheat using mexican varieties and breeding them with local varieties in order to achieve disease resistance. The training part of the project contributed to improve the farmers and institutional practices, develop 11 field stations, desing the crop management practices for weed and pest control, the use of winter wheat with flowering stage after frost hazard. A very detailed review is made of the key people and institutions which with their work helped to improve wheat production and laid the foundations for the development of the main Turkish crop.
