Contribuciones en la genética molecular al mejoramiento por productividad en trigo - La Estanzuela (Uruguay) INIA|CIMMYT : 1998 - Printed

The genetic study of characters have played a key role in the advances made in the application molecular genetics. These provide information regarding loci that control primary agronomic characters such as biomass, yield potential, adaptation, resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses and industrial quality, etc.||The availability of genetic maps with ample coverage of the basic genomes of wheat developed through different molecular marker systems have permitted localization and analysis of genes that determine different types of characters. An access to the sequence of markers and genes through the data bases such as GrainGenes and SRS permit actual identification and analysis of different production characters at the molecular level.||Given the complex genetics for a majority of the production characters, the opportunities to develop applications for a breeding program are more when the molecular markers are based on the direct information regarding the sequence of the expressed loci (markers type I) as compared to the markers based on mapped genetic polymorphism (markers type II). For this reason, the cloning of the genes of major effects and of the QTL's located through the mapping strategies constitute an area of major impact for the future selection and genetic manipulation of the crop programs.||The possible areas of application of the molecular genetics to the crop breeding programs include the utilization of different types of molecular markers in the selection of characters such as disease resistance, grain quality and environmental adaptation. The manipulation of agronomic characters via genetic engineering is another area of interest. The contribution of the molecular genetics to the breeding for high yield in wheat will be more in those programs that are working to accumulate favorable genes for certain characters by utilizing the recurrent selection methods assisted by the molecular markers to identify particular alleles and in the reconstruction of adapted genotypes.
