Patronato's member farmers use voluntary fixed quotas to fund research at CIANO (Agricultural Research Center of the Northwest) focused specifically on Sonora. Mexico's particular production problems. Results have been spectacular: the Yaqui Valley produces 20% of Mexico's wheat on 1% of the country's cultivated land. The system has spurred the development of 12 other patronatos in Mexico, and could be implemented in other developing countries.
