The effect of green manuring and application of fertilizer on the yield of bread wheat at Adet in North-Western Ethiopia - Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) CIMMYT : 1999 - Printed

The effect of green manuring and N-P fertilizer application on the yield of bread wheat was studied at the Adet Research Center in the 1992 and 1993 cropping seasons. Mean grain yields of a11 treatments were significantly higher in the first year (24 q ha-1l) than in the second year (11 q ha-1). A significantly higher mean grain yield (20 q ha-1) was obtained from lupin-manured plots than vetch-manured and the control which gave 18 and 14 q ha-l, respectively. Rate of applied N significantly influenced grain yield and plant height while P significantly affected only grain yield. The response to N was higher than the response to P as reflected in the increase in the yield of the highest level over the control. For each level of N, grain yields declined significantly in the second year. With no addition of chemical fertilizers, the incorporation of vetch and lupin green manures increased yield of wheat by 0.5 and 0.8 q ha-l, equivalent to the yields obtained with the application of 46-0, 69-0 or 46-30 kg N-P205 ha-l, respectively. An interaction of N and P was also observed for grain yield: the highest yield (22 q ha-1) was obtained with the application of the highest levels ofN-P205, resulting in a 45% yield increase over the control (12 q ha-1).
