Cropping patterns influenced some soil properties but not the productivity of soil. Forest soil is more fertile compared to other cropping patterns as indicated by higher content of organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and cation exchange capacity. Its productivity, however, in terms of corn yield in pots was not superior over those under cropping patterns. The assumption that soil from farms with the same cropping patterns and soil series are homogenous was not true as indicated by the large mean square for experimental error. The reason for this heterogeneity may be due to differences in the management practices employed by different
