A theoretical expectation that milling yield is related linearly to grain size was sustained only for individual cultivar-site combinations. Of a number of other factors investigated, only grain bulk density showed a relationship with milling yield, and this too was dependent on cultivar and site. Probably better-milling wheats differ from others in a suite of characters, each of small effect and difficult to demonstrate
