Four pasture species sown at the same time in heavy and light soil conditions were sampled for barley yellow dwarf viruses. Only PAV-like, RPV-like, and mixed infections of these two viruses were detected from the two sites. Higher levels of infection (from predominantly PAV-like viruses) were detected in fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) (21 %) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) (27 %). Levels of infection were lower in cocksfoot (Dactylus glomerate L.) (6 %) and phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L.) (7 %), and both were predominantly infected with RPV-like viruses.
