Improvement for maize (Zea mays L.) seed production [Hungary] - 1989 - Printed

6 tables; 1 ill.; 11 ref

A 10-year maize research programme was conducted under Hungarian conditions for investigating the method of burning as a possible way of flowering synchronization, the effect of rough detasseling on both seed- and F1 production, and the result of early and late detasseling. The effect of genetic contamination and that of the 1000-grain-weight were also studied. All trials were set up both with different crossing types and different genotypes. The effect of burning at 5-8 leaf stage on pollination depends on the genotype. It has to be stressed that fractional planting or similar flowering time are much better ways than burning to achieve synchronized flowering. The extent of seed yield decrease caused by rough detasseling depends on the genotype. Leaf removal has no influence on the performance of the progeny. Yield reduction due to genetic contamination is higher with single and modified single crosses than with double crosses, and cannot be counterbalanced by increasing plant density. The effect of seed size on yield depends on the genotype. These genotype responses suggest that the technology of seed production has to be completed with the results of trials of this kind
