Farming systems research (FSR) has been an important force in international agriculture for more than a decade. It has brought a series offresh perspectives to agricultural research, but the characteristics that distinguish it from more conventional research are also a source of problems in fully utilizing the approach. FSR is responsible for significant changes in research management and has contributed to our understanding offarmers' priorities. The principal challenge for the future is to use FSR to improve the efficiency of entire research and extension organizations.
