Following inoculation of turnip plants by means of Circulifer tenellus spiroplasmas were cultured first from roots (4 d) and then from the youngest leaves (8 d) but almost never from older leaves. S. citri was detected by ELISA 7 d after inoculation and 5-9 d before symptoms appeared.
