Stimulation of pollen embryo induction in tobacco by pretreatment of excised anthers in a water-saturated atmosphere - 1980 - Printed

11 ref.; Summary (En)

The effect on the embryogenic potential of tobacco anthers of a pre-culture period in a water-saturated atmosphere was examined. It was found that maintaining excised anthers in such an atmosphere for 2 or 3 days at 23 deg C increased the number of anthers subsequently producing pollen plants 4-fold and doubled the number in which embryos were induced. This increase in frequency was negatively correlated with the rate of anther senescence in culture. It is suggested that some component of the usual culture medium is toxic to anthers during the early period of culture
