Results are given of a trial carried out during 1977, 1978, 1979 in eleven countries, by participants in the FAO European cooperative network on Maize. Eleven hybrids wre used for the study of numerous methods for calculating heat units: linear estimation based on daily maximum temperature (S(, N)), and mean (S), with different threshold and ceiling temperatures, exponential estimations (Q(,10)), and using some methods cited in the literature (Tollenaar, 1979; Brown, 1969; Blacklow, 1972; Coelho, 1978; Arnold 1975). For the entire period from sowing to silking, temperature is very important and the coefficient of variation (C.V.) among trials is about 7-8%. The best
